🧡 Happiness Is a Byproduct of Becoming Whole
Maybe happiness is not something we have to chase.
“Happiness is a byproduct of becoming whole.”
Words inspired by Alan Watts
So many of us have been taught to chase happiness as though it exists somewhere outside of us.
We tell ourselves we will finally be happy when we heal enough, accomplish enough, find the right relationship, feel more confident, or get our lives to look the way we imagined.
But happiness is rarely something we can force.
Sometimes, happiness begins to emerge when we stop abandoning the parts of ourselves we have judged, hidden, or pushed away.
Becoming whole does not mean becoming perfect.
It means learning to welcome ALL of who we are.
It means turning toward the anxious part instead of trying to silence it.
Listening to the angry part instead of judging it.
Making room for the grieving part instead of rushing it.
Offering compassion and understanding towards the parts that compare, control, please, avoid, procrastinate, or believe they are not enough.
Every part of us developed for a reason. Even the patterns we want to change often began as intelligent ways of protecting us, helping us belong, or keeping us from being hurt again.
At UpSpiral, our work is not about getting rid of these parts so that only the “happy” ones remain.
It is about building a new relationship with ALL of them. 💫
We learn to meet our inner world with curiosity instead of criticism. We begin to understand what our protectors fear might happen if they softened. We listen for the pain, longing, and unmet needs beneath the behaviors we once judged without becoming them.
And slowly, the parts that have been fighting for our attention no longer have to work quite so hard.
Wholeness does not mean that we never feel sadness, fear, anger, grief, or disappointment.
It means we can remain connected to ourselves while those emotions move through us.
It means we no longer have to exile one part of ourselves in order to love another.
There is a quiet kind of happiness that can emerge from this inner belonging. 🤍
Not the temporary happiness that comes when everything is going our way, but something deeper and steadier – a feeling of being at home within ourselves.
We may still have difficult days. Our protectors may still become very activated. Old wounds may still ache.
But we are no longer leaving ourselves alone inside those experiences.
Perhaps becoming whole is not about becoming someone new.
Perhaps it is about lovingly gathering back the parts of ourselves we once had to leave behind – and letting each of them know:
You belong here, too. 🫶
And happiness?
Maybe happiness is not something we have to chase.
Maybe it is one of the beautiful things that begins to find us when every part of us KNOWS it has a place. 🧡
